First day in Umarkhed
Our first full day in Umarkhed, a village in rural Maharashtra, also happened to be India’s independence day. After the flag-raising ceremony we were mobbed for our autographs. I’ve always wanted to be famous! The principal watched the students prepare for the ceremony. There are about 2000 students here, studying English, Math, Biology, Botany, and probably a few other subjects. The students pay from 200 to 2000 rupees per class ($5 to $50).
