We spent three days in Dongri, a Muslim neighborhood in Mumbai, right near the end of Ramadan. Besides being good for laughs (trying to find vegetarian food in a Muslim area is hilarious) it was a wonderful experience. Because it was Ramadan and everyone was fasting during the day, at sunset the whole area came alive. I have never seen so many people in one place before. It was sensory overload, with so many sounds and smells suddenly appearing. It was also a very poor area, with many beggars squatting outside every mosque, and people sleeping everywhere, even amongst piles of trash and mountains of goats, many of which probably took their last breath a few days later, at the end of Ramadan, Eid.
