Rotary International Cataract Surgery Camp
The Rotary Club of Umarkhed sponsored an eye camp which provided free cataract surgery for over 50 people on Christmas day, including Keshav Dahagao, 65, and Parubai Tulsi, 55. Mr. Dahagao earns Rs. 2000 a month ($50) working as a laborer, and with that income he supports his wife, two children and a daughter-in-law. Ms. Tulsi, a widow, earns Rs. 20 (50ยข) a day as a field laborer, and has no one to support or to call upon for support. Neither of them could afford to pay the Rs. 6000 ($150) required to get the operation done in a private clinic. Rotary paid for everything including transport (both live over 50km from Umarkhed), food, lodging at the hospital, dark shades and, in 40 days, new prescription glasses. The visiting surgeon, a government hospital employee, provided the lens implants. Click here for a slideshow of Mr. Dahagao and Ms. Tulsi.
