Fishing, a troubled industry in Kerala

Since the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami many traditional fishing villages in Kerala have seen a dramatic decline in the health of their fisheries. Fishermen are now pulling in mostly empty nets and fish-vendors are forced to sell fish from neighboring states. A tourism boom is putting increased pressure on the fishermen while bringing a rapid influx of cash to the area. With better economic opportunities elsewhere, the young generation is no longer interested in fishing. This may be the last generation of traditional fishermen in Kerala.

But for the women who play, roller derby is more than a sport, it's a way of life.
